William J. Mitchell, Professor of Architecture and Media Arts and Sciences, and Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. (1954) Professor, passed away on June 11, 2010 after a long battle with cancer. He was director of the MIT Design Laboratory and the Media Lab's Smart Cities research group. He was formerly Dean of the MIT School of Architecture and Planning and Head of the Program in Media Arts and Sciences.

Takehiko Nagakura is an architect from Tokyo. At MIT, he teaches courses related comp uter-aided design, and his research focuses on the representation and computation of architectural space and fo rmal design knowledge. He has founded and led Architecture, Representation and Computation group (ARC) since 1996. His recent projects includes Gushikawa Orchid Center in Okinawa, Unbuilt Monuments, and Deskrama.

Dennis Shelden teaches and conducts work in architectural geometry and digitally integrated professional practice. His professional work focuses on applications of building information and digital media to improve professional design and construction methods. He teaches design and construction applications of geometry, digital modeling and information management. He is an Associate Professor of the Practice in Design and Computation, and co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Gehry Technologies. He received his education at MIT.

George Stiny, a theorist of design and computation, joined the Department of Architecture in 1996 after fifteen years on the faculty of the University of California at Los Angeles. Educated at MIT and at UCLA, where he received a PhD in Engineering, Stiny has also taught at the University of Sydney, the Royal College of Art (London), and the Open University.
